Over twenty years ago, the Dutch government imposed a law on painter-decorators, prohibiting the use of oil-based paints for interior jobs due to health concerns. While a legitimate reason, this sudden shift presented numerous challenges for painters. They lacked experience working with waterborne materials, which were of poor quality at the time. Moreover, the available brushes were ill-suited for these new paints, with low-quality synthetic filaments and even a mixture of natural hog bristles—an unsuitable combination for water-based paints.

The result? Fading joy in the art of painting.

It was during a working holiday in New Zealand, alongside a fellow painter, that Frank, the creator of Cling On!, stumbled upon a revelation. He discovered the remarkable advantages of top-grade synthetic filaments, experiencing an entirely new touch and feel that rekindled his passion for painting. Inspired by this transformative moment, Frank made a bold decision in 2007—to develop his own line of paintbrushes, as nothing decent was available in his country or Europe as a whole.

A Journey of Innovation and Collaboration

And so, the search began. Over the course of three years, Frank tirelessly sought the perfect mixture of filaments, a quest that became a journey in itself. Additionally, he had to find a place where these brushes could be manufactured. Although Frank didn’t possess a factory, his determination led him to a remarkable discovery—a social workplace. This unique environment provided meaningful jobs to individuals with physical or psychological limitations, offering them a protected and inclusive space to work.

Within this workplace, a small section had been handcrafting paintbrushes for many years, tailoring them to the specific requirements of their customers. With the collaboration of these skilled artisans, Frank worked out his ideas for the ideal brushes. Countless iterations, discussions, and refinements followed, leading to the birth of the Cling On! paintbrushes that you may be familiar with today.

The unwavering dedication and willingness of the artisans to realise Frank’s vision propelled them forward for another two years. Finally, after five years of relentless pursuit, Frank’s ideas became a reality. The initial offering consisted of just eight different sizes, but the collection has since expanded to 23 types and sizes, with more on the horizon. Each brush reflects an ongoing commitment to meet Frank’s exacting quality standards.
